Fred Roberts

July 8, 1941 — November 29, 2024

Hyden, Kentucky

Fred Roberts, a lifelong resident of Hyden, Kentucky, passed away with his daughters Helen and Tonya at his side, peacefully in Harlan County Kentucky on November 29, 2024, at the age of 83. Born to union of Golden and Flora Sizemore Roberts on July 8, 1941, in Hyden, KY. Fred exemplified what it meant to live a full life. His formative years were spent primarily in Hyden; however, he also resided in various cities such as Dayton, Ohio; Frankfort, Kentucky, Louisville, Kentucky and Newport Kentucky, before returning home.  While residing in Louisville, Fred was employed by Phillip Morris Co., as well as a member of the United Steel Workers where he painted bridges and sky scrapers.  It was in Hyden, Kentucky that he established his roots and built a legacy characterized by resilience and vitality. This geographical diversity enriched his life experiences and shaped his multifaceted personality.

Throughout his life, Fred was known for his vibrant spirit and zest for adventure. He engaged in activities ranging from travel across the United States, frequenting Churchill Downs and hunting. Notably dedicated to physical fitness, he maintained an active lifestyle by frequenting gyms and community pavilions. His work ethic was equally remarkable; he often worked seven days a week while prioritizing his family and meeting the needs of those in his life. This commitment not only set him apart but also served as an inspiration to those around him. His dedication to health was not merely about physical appearance but rather an embodiment of his philosophy: to live life fully on one’s own terms. The impact Fred made during his lifetime will be remembered fondly by those who knew him as a man who truly embraced life.

Fred's passing marks the end of an era for his family and friends. Preceded in death by both parents and all siblings—including Edith Fern Roberts Wooton, Sophie Ann Roberts Smith, Leota Roberts Brown, Louise Roberts and Scott Roberts and six grandchildren, Nathan Andew Sullivan, Eric Brandon McKnight Brandy Brock, Golden Allen Roberts, Justin Brandon Combs and Brian Chandler along with two sons-in-law, Edgar Matt Baker and Everett Lee Sheroan and one great granddaughter Evon Lee Ferguson.

He leaves surviving half-sister Brenda Smith of London, Kentucky along with five daughters whom he loved: Helen Louise Roberts Baker, of Hyden Kentucky; Oleen McKnight of Viper, Kentucky; Tonya Leota Roberts Sheroan of London, Kentucky; Lina Lee Bailey of Benton, Arkansas; and Tammy Jo Roberts Carmack of Owenton, Kentucky. Two sons, David Andrew Brock and Fred Roberts Jr of Jonesville, Kentucky. His familial legacy continues through fifteen grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, who will carry forth his legacy of resilience and vigor.
