Mavie Lewis, age 89, of Smilax, Kentucky, widow of the late Avon Lewis, departed for her heavenly home on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Hazard A.R.H. Medical Center. She was born October 25, 1925 in Leslie County, Kentucky to the union of the late Corbin Baker and the late Sylvania Cody Baker. Mavie was a homemaker, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, talking to relatives and friends, and working in her flowers. She loved each family member and enjoyed her time with them, whether on the phone or in person. Most important to her was attending church, living and witnessing for God. Mavie was a charter member of the Full Gospel Church of Jesus Christ at Smilax, Kentucky, and a honorary member of the Kentucky Colonels.
Mavie is preceded in death by: her parents: Corbin and Sylvania Cody Baker; her husband: Avon Lewis, three sisters: Merkie Joseph, infant twin sisters, Mary and Martha; three brothers: Estill Baker, Chester Baker and infant brother, Dennis; one infant grandchild, two infant great -grandsons: Javon Ray Joseph and Daniel Ray Joseph Jr., one son-in-law: Bobby Rex Coots, nephew: James Harold Joseph, four nieces: Judy Baker Hall and three infant nieces.
Survivors include: two sons: Donnie Lewis of Smilax, KY, and David (Linda) Lewis of Smilax; four daughters: Lorene L. Coots of Wooton, KY, Loretta Turpin of Smilax, KY, Geraldine (Willie Ray) Gilbert and of East Bernstadt, KY, and Merkie (Bobby) Joseph of Smilax, KY; twelve grandchildren: April Marette Turpin, Patrick Coots (Candice), Daniel Joseph (Carol), Kendall Gilbert (Rachael), Megan Michelle Turpin, Timothy Joseph, Shane Coots, Angela Martin (Steve), Byron Lewis, Kimberley Lawson (Steven), Brent Lewis (Kelly), and Victoria Diana Joseph (Shannon); twelve great-grandchildren: Kylee Lewis, Colton Gilbert, Austin Joseph, Bella Lewis, Patience Wilder, Colin Gilbert, Lorynn Coots, Conner Martin, Callie Martin, Grant Lawson, Jasmine Wilder, Landon Coots, and more on the way; four sisters-in-law: Helen Howard (Garland), Offie Lewis, Eadle Shepherd, Fay Frez; her caring pastor: Rev. Billy Joe Lewis; her church family and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Full Gospel Church of Jesus Christ, with Rev. Billy Joe Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Full Gospel Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers, and granddaughters as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. Monday .
The family entrusted Wolfe and Sons Funeral Home to handle all the arrangements.
