Owen Jason Adams, better known as “Goofy” to most, was born at Wendover, Kentucky on January 13, 1938. He was born to the late Reuben and Eva Hoskins Adams. He was the third son of 15 children. Owen was united in marriage to Shirley Bowling on October 29, 1957. They were married at Wendover by the late Jim Hayes.
Owen was a beloved and well-known figure in the community as he was the owner and founder of the beloved Goofy’s Game Room, a local treasure. He began his adventure over 50 years ago under the old “Dime Store” building. After a couple of moves, in 1982 he moved the game room to Dryhill Road. There he added a restaurant, and it became, Goofy’s Game Room & Grill. Over the years Owen has flipped many burgers and played many games of pool. For years, locals have enjoyed some of his originals, such as: “The Goofy Burger” or “The Goofy Meal”. If you came to visit Hyden, or you were a local who moved away, you had to get a “Goofy Burger” while in town.
When he wasn’t behind the grill, you could find him doing what he loved, trading guns and knives. In his former years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. There was one thing about it, if you were around Owen “Goofy”, you were going to enjoy a laugh! He especially enjoyed making kids laugh, many times with his famous Goofy hat. He always said he wore the hat because he enjoyed seeing the smiles it brought to the children’s faces.
