Rufus Baker, born May 30, 1946 in Leslie County, KY to the union of the late John D. Baker and the late Della Fouts Baker. He departed this life on Thursday, February 03, 2011 at the Mary Breckinridge Hospital in Hyden. He was 64 years of age and was residing at 143 Pheasant Fork Road, Smilax, KY at the time of his passing. Rufus was a life long resident of Leslie County and served on the Hyden, Wooton and Cutshin Fire Departments. He was the former Fire Chief of Cutshin Fire Department, Special Deputy Sheriff and was a member of the Masonic Order. He enjoyed hunting as a hobby. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Grover Baker, one sister: Iniss Singletary, one nephew: Kenny Baker, one great nephew: Zachary Ulenchong and one brother-in-law: Willis Wells. Rufus leaves the following relatives surviving: His loving and devoted wife of 43 years: Ruthie Callahan Baker of Smilax, KY, one son: Hurlen Lee Baker of Smilax, two daughters: Diana Sansom & Donald of Huntington, WV and Viola Lewis & Tony of Wooton, KY. Three sisters: Lula Wells, Beulah Callahan and Mary Ellen Day & Charles Ray. Sister-in-law: Beth Baker, niece: Kandy Baker, nephew: Kerry Baker, , five grandchildren: Zachary Casey, Alisha, Makayla, J.D., special friends: Toby Wells, Mike Miller and Oma Wells. A host of many other family and friends also survive.
